How to Make a Practice Quiz From Your Notes

A strong practice quiz samples the important ideas, changes the level of thinking, and turns every wrong answer into a next step.

A practice quiz should do more than produce a score. It should show which ideas you can retrieve, which ones you can apply, and why an incorrect answer failed.

You can build one manually or use an AI quiz maker, but the quality checks are the same. Start with the source, define the learning goals, mix question types, and make the feedback useful.

Step 1: Map the important ideas

List the chapter’s learning objectives, major headings, and ideas your lecturer emphasised. Group them into three levels:

  • Foundations: terms, facts, formulas, and structures.
  • Connections: causes, comparisons, sequences, and mechanisms.
  • Application: cases, calculations, interpretations, and decisions.

If the quiz samples only foundations, a high score may hide weak reasoning.

Step 2: Choose a balanced set of questions

For a 12-question quiz, try a mix such as:

  • three direct-recall questions;
  • three "how" or "why" questions;
  • two comparisons;
  • two application scenarios; and
  • two questions based on mistakes from an earlier session.

The exact mix should follow the course. A mathematics quiz needs worked problems; anatomy may need identification and function; law may need issue spotting and application to a fact pattern.

Step 3: Write plausible distractors

For multiple-choice questions, wrong options should represent realistic misunderstandings—not jokes or obviously unrelated terms. Each question should have one defensible best answer based on the source.

Avoid clues such as one answer being much longer than the others, repeated words that reveal the key, or absolute language that makes the wrong option easy to eliminate.

Step 4: Require production, not only recognition

Multiple choice is efficient, but add questions that require you to produce an explanation. A short-answer prompt such as Why does increasing temperature speed this reaction only up to a point? exposes different gaps from selecting one of four options.

Voice answers can be especially useful for checking whether you can organise a process without a set of visible choices.

Step 5: Add feedback tied to the source

For every answer, include:

  1. the correct response;
  2. a brief reason;
  3. why the tempting wrong option is wrong; and
  4. the section of the notes to revisit.

Feedback turns the quiz from a scoreboard into a repair tool. After reviewing, answer the missed question again without looking.

Check an AI-generated quiz

Before relying on generated questions, verify that:

  • every answer is supported by the uploaded material;
  • the wording is unambiguous;
  • numerical answers include units and assumptions;
  • the quiz covers the important topics rather than whichever paragraph was easiest to parse;
  • no question accidentally reveals another answer; and
  • explanations do not introduce unsupported facts.

What to do with the results

Do not simply repeat the full quiz until the answers look familiar. Sort missed questions by cause: missing fact, confused relationship, calculation error, or unclear explanation. Repair each cause, then use a new question that tests the same idea in a different way.
